There are going to be two great conventions in the Seattle area over the weekend of August 7 – 9, Dragonflight and Innocente Seraphim. This week we’ll be talking to organizers of both cons to get a little preview of what will be going on. Also, in order to prevent this week’s podcast from being another three hour long marathon, we are breaking our Author Spotlight out into its own separate show that will be going up on Tuesday! We’ll be talking to C.T. Adams and Cathy Clamp about Cold Moon Rising, the seventh book in their Tales of the Sazi series.
Anything geeky you might be interested in probably had a major development of some kind coming out of San Diego over the weekend from Iron Man 2 to Avatar, Dr. Who, Torchwood, Twilight, Fringe, True Blood and everything else. Unfortunately combing through the mountain of announcements was a little overwhelming but I’ve picked out a selection of smaller stories that kind of caught my eye.
Comics

Fantagraphics announced that they will finally be publishing the complete run of Walt Kelly’s classic comic strip Pogo. This straight from their twitter feed

The Complete Pogo had been announced in 2007 but actual publication has been delayed because of difficulty finding quality source strips to scan.

Dark Horse will be teaming up with Felicia Day for a comic based on The Guild. From the press release:
The Guild follows six players, AKA “Guildies” (Bladezz, Codex, Vork, Tinkerballa, Zaboo, and Clara), who decide to finally meet in real life after spending months playing together in an online world. Their individual social dysfunctions lead to several problems in the real world, but together, as in the online game, they become greater than the sum of their collected baggage and start to become . . . well . . . kinda normal . . . er.
The online show now stands as one of YouTube’s most-subscribed series. It started as an independent project funded by fan donations via PayPal before being sponsored by Microsoft and Sprint in season 2. Season 3 will debut on Xbox/MSN/Zune on August 25.
The artist of the initial three-issue miniseries is undetermined, but the story will be penned by Felicia Day. Day, a self-proclaimed gaming aficionado, stated, “I’m really excited to work in a new medium and expand the Guild universe. The comics will be a great way for fans to become more involved with the characters, and see the characters interact in environments that we can’t afford to show in the web series. I can’t imagine working with a better company than Dark Horse. It seems like a perfect match for the show. Indie cred to the max!”
We were emailed from MSN who let us in on a bit of their Comic-Con Coverage. Great videos (sorry about the commercials at the beginning)! I’m embedding a couple of The Guild. –Shannon
Movies

Gary Oldman speaking at the Book of Eli panel at comic con dropped a bombshell about the next Batman movie when he said “the next batman is next year, so I think it is two years away. But you didn’t hear it from me.” He has now back-peddled a bit in an interview with Ain’t It Cool he said that while he was sure everyone wanted to make another movie it might be two or three years before it got started.
Hot off Warren Ellis’ twitter!
Something I was supposed to announce at San Diego and couldn’t: http://www.warrenellis.com/?p=7579 7 minutes ago from twhirl
The link goes to a post on Ellis’ blog announcing that he is writing a film treatment for what he calls an “Untitled Arthurian Project” for Hollywood Gang, the co-producers of Frank Miller’s 300. I’m a sucker for both Arthurian myths and Warren Ellis’ writing so this made me do a little happy dance.

IGN has a few details on the Gears of War movie including the news that, in spite of rumors, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will not be playing the protagonist Marcus Fenix. You may remember that Johnson played “Sarge” in the movie version of Doom and Gears of War director Len Wiseman stated that “a Doom connection would not be smart for us”.
Theater

I just couldn’t pass this one up. Anyone who is going to be in New York next month can catch one of five performances of I Can Has Cheezeburger: The MusicLOL playing at the New York International Fringe Festival. I have no idea what a LOLcats musical would be like and I’m not entirely sure I want to find out but somehow I can’t look away…
TV

The Simpsons twenty-first season will begin this fall and it will apparently be packed full of guest stars according to Entertainment Weekly. Guest voices will include Chris Martin from the band Coldplay, Sarah Silverman, Anne Hathaway, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Neve Campbell, Eartha Kitt, and the Smothers Brothers.
