Why limit your summer reading to words when you can have words, art and some amazing storytelling all at once? This week’s episode is all about graphic novels! Ones everyone should have, some older ones you may have missed and some new titles you may not have heard about yet. To give you the full super hero experience we also have an interview with composer Mateo Messina about his “Symphony of the Super-Hero”.
We also begin what we hope will be a continuing series of author spotlights this week. First up is our interview with local Seattle author of supernatural detective fiction Kat Richardson. We also have our full review of the Seattle Symphony’s Distant Worlds concert.
All that plus the weekly geek news and events!

Geek Out
This week our long time World of Warcraft buddy Sean geeks out about a new outfit for his character:

Hey guys Sean (aka Puck) here! Totally geeking out right now. I’ve been playing on Alliance off and on, and I recently found the mariachi set in warcraft! So I got it on my Draenei paladin. The set is named after Jalisco which is a state in Mexico. I lived in Guadalajara, Jalisco for two months performing research for my university. While there I found out that Guadalajara is the birth city of the Mariachi, and got to see some mariachi bands play. Finding this set in WoW means I get to play pretend mariachi!
Now all I need is a guitar or some maracas…
Any ways I was geeking out and thought of you guys. Love the show, and keep it up!
Adios amigos!
-Sean

Why no Sandman love? It won a World Fantasy Award for short fiction. This is a series of GNs that all other GNs want to be when they grow up.
Like we said, we couldn’t mention EVERY GN that we loved, though I think we did mention the Absolute Sandman editions that we have.
We may have to do a Gaiman show…then we could mention it!
Loved the conversation with Matt’s parents. I made my band/orch friends in college listen to FF (orchestral) music and they enjoyed it. One told me he thought it sounded like Mozart in style, which he said was because of its structure; apparently there are people who don’t like Mozart (buh?) and they complain that his structure is too perfect and predictable. Or so I’m told.
I absolutely love doing stuff like this. I am fascinated by differences is musical tastes. Like I said in the episode, I would LOVE to take a copy of, say, Sabotage by the Beastie Boys back to 1950 and play it for someone to get their reaction. I suspect it would be something on the order of “Why is he shouting?”
