This week we defy the record-breaking heat wave in Seattle to bring you information about two great conventions coming up in two weeks.
Dragonflight is a venerable Seattle gaming convention in its 30th year and Innocente Seraphim is a ball jointed doll and Japanese gothic lolita fashion convention in its very first year. We have interviewed organizers from both conventions and got a preview of some of the cool programming and events to look forward to.
We also have two different views on the San Diego Comic Con from two listeners who were there, one a veteran SDCC atendee and one who was there for the very first time.
All that plus geek news and the weekly events.

Geek Out
This week’s geet out is from listener “Number 6″ who geeks out about a new DVD set.

Hey guys!
Heard you guys mention that one of the things people should geek out about DVD boxed sets on your podcast this week so I thought I would go all geeky about the complete Prisoner box that I just picked up! I first saw the prisoner when they showed it on channel 9 years ago and totally loved it. I still think it is one of the best TV series ever (along with Twin Peaks and Firefly!)
I hadn’t watched it for years but I finally got the whole series boxed set off Amazon and it came last week. I really wanted to just sit down and watch the whole thing but I’ve been trying to pace myself since there are only 17 episodes and I want to make them last!
So anyway, thats my geek out. Love the show!
Number 6
We’d love to hear from our listeners about what makes YOU Geek Out!
E-mail us at seattlegeekly@gmail.com or call us at (206)201-2352 to tell us what you’ve found that makes you geek out! It’s kinda like sharing your geek week with us! Don’t be shy! It could be old, new, or just geeky to you!

Did you get to see any panels?
I went to only one panel this year for several reasons. I’ve been to hundreds of panels over the past 10+ years, and waiting in hours long lines this year just wasn’t my cup o tea. Each year is a different experience. Though the one panel I could not miss was the Robot Chicken Panel, as I am betrothed to them with all my nerdy heart. It started when I made a little website back in 2005 called iheartrobotchicken.com. An unofficial fansite, I worked on the website diligently weekly at the very beginning which premiered on Valentine’s Day a week before the show even started. It originally had a very comic booky design and was easily interchangeable for the weekly updates. I got a bit of attention from the crew and a few people from [adult swim] and from then on I knew that we would become very dear friends.
At the panel we got to see a 5-10 minute preview of the new season and the highlight was Dark Crys-tal. A hip hop parody of Dark Crystal complete with rap by T-Pain. It was quite enjoyable and expect that one to be a memorable moment on Robot Chicken’s 4th season. I believe it premiered July 26th on [adult swim].
Seems that you’re part of a roller derby troupe…what was up with you all and Robot Chicken at the con?
My reason for going to the panel this year was to challenge someone on the crew to a full on Roller Derby hip check at the Roller Skate Party that was due Saturday night. The past 3 years, I have spent forming the NW’s fastest growing Roller Derby League, the Slaughter County Roller Vixens in Kitsap County. This was another project that I was very proud to have been a part of and the announcement of the Robot Chicken Skate Party Tour, made this vacation come full circle. My heart pounding as I stood in line for the mic, I introduced myself as my Roller Derby persona, “Nerd Rage”. After a few quips about fanny pack whips, I poised my question. I think I may have scared them…but Seth volunteered himself for the hip check. He was recently on WWE and had gotten a nice kick to the chest, so he said he could take it. One of the crew taunted “Seth’s gonna get beat up by a girl!” It was all set in motion now. Saturday night, I was set to break Seth Green.
Arriving at the Skate Party was like arriving at the Red Carpet for me. I met up with several Roller Derby girls from local teams, San Diego Derby Dolls and Rogue Roller Derby as well. They made me feel welcome as I think I may have been one of the only derby girls there from an outside league.
Warming up was great. I was wearing my handmade Star Wars bedsheet dress, fanny pack, Ignignokt ATHF kneehigh socks I received several Comic Cons ago, and studded belt. I looked like one badass nerd! After showing off some speed, agility and form, the party started. Guests rolled in, Star Wars characters on skates, and the Robot Chicken crew! Matt Senreich skated up to me in rentals and asked, “How do you stop in these?” He was used to his hockey skates. I laughed and showed him how to do a T-stop and said to keep practicing because it takes about 100 times doing it to get it down. Next thing I know, he’s rolling up with in-lines on and I made fun of him telling him that us Derby girls call those “fruit boots”.
Seth arrived and a crowd formed around him. I waited a bit for the pictures to be taken and approached him asking if he was “ready for his hip check?” I don’t think he was ever ready for it. I kept imagining the headlines, “Derby girl puts Seth Green in the ER” but instead, the headline might read more like “Seth Green Robot Chickened Out on Derby Girl Beating”. I don’t blame him though, I can pack quite a wallop. I’d be scared of me! Seth is quite a bit smaller in stature than I am and considering the 3 years of derby training and a life long of being a rink rat, it would be disastrous. Plus as he noted, “there are 9 stops on the tour and he didn’t want to be hurt for all of them”.
The party was a blast including a conga line with the Robot Chicken, and the camo clad dude who skated crazily, falling every few minutes and then him falling in front of me as I leapt in the air over him and landed like a superstar! The crowd roared and I got a few young fans who fought over who wanted to couple skate with me to Kanye West’s Heartless. I look forward to seeing the Robot Chicken gang again at the Las Vegas stop as I am currently writing up this interview at the Roller Con. They will be here Sunday night and a gaggle of derby girls will be attending as well.
Did you see anyone famous at SDCC? Who? Were they nice?
I actually got to hang out and chat with Tom Kenny (Spongebob) and David “Gruber” Alan (Freaks & Geeks). Tom was staying on my floor at the hotel and I recognized him from years past. We both had kids about the same age and he remembered me telling him about them and their names Anakin and Kal-El. He promised to slide some VIP tickets to his outdoor show, a 12 piece band called Sponge Bob & the High Seas. Tom and David were outside the hotel and I chatted up with them about Roller Derby and being a geek. Tom dubbed me “in the industry” now because of Roller Derby. I never thought of it that way, but it did in fact give me something to relate to others “in the industry”. Tom and David stated that they were most definitely going to check out the LA Derby Dolls which play frequently near where they are.

What was your favorite part of SDCC?
My favorite part would have been when I made a friend at one of the booths, Britton Walters and his company nerfect.com. He sells Stickers and Buttons at his booth and we seemed to hit it off in the weird comedic nerd personality realm. After chatting up a bit, we became BFFs of the con and I came by on Saturday dressed in my derby regalia and made a statement about holding up a sign that said, “Line Forms Here for FREE BEATINGS (with love).” So, naturally, he made me a sign and it was launched! I started my circus “step right up” monologue, yelling out, “You sir, you look like you deserve a beatin”, and with looky loos abound, I gave out “staged” beat downs as others took pictures. I had my mean Nerd Rage face on. The best beat down was when I straddled a passing good looking Superman, him on his stomach and me grabbing his leg and neck like he had tackled one of the worst villains of his life! NERD RAGE! The derby girl with a vendetta that her recent JLA Comic was poorly written!
Was this your first SDCC? Would you go again?
This wasn’t my first SDCC and it most certainly won’t be my last. I’ve come since 1998, missing a few years here and there. I’ve come as a volunteer, as press and as a spectator. Next year might be different. Since I was taking a 2 weeks vacation to hit up both SDCC and Rollercon, I took it easy this year. I worked in films which got me into the con for the whole weekend. Volunteering is the way to go. You may not be guaranteed to have off for the panels and events you want to attend, but it’s an option considering next year the 4 day passes have raised up to $100! Still worth every penny. If I go that route next year, I will be a little more planned out. I would like to attend next year at a booth if I can get in. I’d like to start the fanny pack revolution, designing different styles of fanny packs. Ones that say “I put the FAN in Fanny Pack”, “Fanny-Pack-Tastic” or “Original Hands Free Device”. This may be a project in the making in between my work, kids, roller derby, drawing, painting, television show development of gsitetv.com, etc….I have a million projects in the works. After all, I am now “in the industry”.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

Before you go to Ino Sera you absolutely must see “Kamikaze Girls” Netflix has it. You’ll understand the whole “Baby the Stars Shine Bright” thing.
I’m sure you’ll get to it eventually but you also must watch Freaks and Geeks! Then watch Undeclared after that. Judd Apatow’s stuff is really good.
Thanks for posting my interview…finally got to listen to the podcast. Last time I tried and computer did not like it
Wish we could have figured out that Twinterview…but yeah…hard. One day, maybe we can do some sort of Twinterview about something in the future. 140 characters or less. It’d be fun if we had people chime in and ask questions. Only thing is that they have to follow us both for the complete interview or they will be like “WTF?” and we will be like “FTW!”
