Show Notes – Episode #26 “H. P. Lovecraft”

Very few authors have had such a wide reaching influence of geek culture in general as Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Lovecraft’s writings have inspired authors, artist, game designers and film makers for a century. This week we talk with Eric Morgret, director of the film Strange Aeons, K. L. Young, editor and art director for Planet Lovecraft magazine and Jenna Pitman, contributing writer for Revenant magazine about their Lovecraft fandom and why they think his ideas continue to hold our imagination.
All that plus our first multiple Geek Out week, the geek news and the weekly events.

Lovecraftian Geek Outs
Hey Shannon & Matt,
I’m very excited for your Lovecraft show. Same goes for the film fest and
Cthulhucon in Portland. Many fans of Cthulhu are also fans of the ocean and marine biology,
perhaps because Lovecraft’s works are laden with the mystery and awe of
the deep. It’s the known unknowns, you know? Anyway, science is surely
geeky in its own right so I’d like to offer a few internet resources for
those interested. There is The Oyster’s Garter (http://theoystersgarter.com/), a blog by
Miriam Goldstein, who you’ll find is quite the geek herself. She blogs
about marine science, about women in scientific fields, and about science
in pop culture. She’s also syndicated by Slate’s DoubleX magazine
(http://www.doublex.com/blog/oystersgarter).There’s also the Cephalopodcast (.com): “The Cephalopodcast is Jason
Robertshaw’s blog/podcast/exegesis about science, education, technology
and the oceans.”Those are my two favorite science-based geeky blogs/podcast. I think fans
of Lovecraft have a natural desire for more knowledge of the unknown,
despite Lovecraft’s warningsYou can find them both on twitter, and
their blogs link to many more. Thanks for all the hard work you put into your lovely podcast!

We asked our Twitter friends what their favorite Lovecraft thing was:
@looocas – Two LC stories always stuck with me growing up: Pickman’s Model: paintings of horrible creatures, has great suspense; and The Cats of Ulthar: Massacre by a horde of cats. Whoa!
@protoncharging – Darkest of the Hillside Thickets .Lovecraft punk band
@Mbranesf Re: fave Lovecraft–”The Hound”
@Drzoltar – Favorite Lovecraft story: The Colour Out of Space. The Shadow Out of Time is a close second.
@TrevorBramble – At the Mountains of Madness, no question!
@retroist – The Dunwich Horror
@MissAmberClark – I’ve always been fond of the Colour Out Of Space.
@Hlprmnky – I’m going to go with the color from out of space, for the sheer “the universe was not meant for you, monkey” factor.

Geek Out
A multiple Geek Out week!
@michaelrobles and @apstephens on Twitter both were geeking out over the arrival of TMNT: Turtles in Time on Xbox Live arcade.
@fancyfembot is geeking out over, and I quote, “Geee Eyeee Jooohhhwww”

@Monkeyking says “Geeking out on KQ10 (Kobold Quarterly issue #10) and some new D&D goodies. And GenCon is next week.
Shannon’s own personal geekout was over the PAX 09 free app on the iPhone. It is just a countdown now, but it will have schedules and maps when they become available.
Finally we got the full spectrum Geek out from Ed in Shoreline
Hi,
When you guys were asking for us to “Geek Out”, for some reason I immediately thought to bring up something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. No idea why, just seemed to make sense, so here goes:
Something Old: My wife and I have been working hard remodeling our basement. When we first moved in to our house a few years ago, we discovered our bathroom in the basement was this odd triangular shape that was decorated with some ugly 60′s era fake rockery on the wall and countertop. We quickly started referring to it as the Batcave. The geek part is, we just got done remodeling that bathroom as a Batcave. My wife Kamie painted a cool mural of Batman working at his computer on the wall, she put in fake stalagtites hanging from the ceiling, I have Batman decorations all over it, and we even repainted in a grey color that Kamie invented that I’ve been calling “Dark Knight”. I can send pictures to anyone who is interested.
Something New: Wednesday Comics. DC Comics has put out this new series recently called Wednesday comics that is coming out weekly. It is on newsprint and unfolds from normal comic book size to a full newspaper size. The idea is to kind of replicate the Sunday funnies format that seems to be dying in this day and age. It is an anthology of one page stories told by the cream of the comic book crop like Paul Pope, Joe Kubert, Geoff Johns, and lots lots more. It is a totally unique and fun series that has gotten me more excited about comics than just about anything in years. Please go check it out.
Something Borrowed: My friend Nate (you guys know him as one of the creators of the Two Percent Solution) had lent me all of the Scott Pilgrim books. I’ve read volumes 1-4 and will start volume 5 soon. If you don’t know, it is an independent comic about a Canadian 20-something and his relationships. The story follows him as he has to defeat his girlfriend’s 7 ex-boyfriends in hand-to-hand combat as a parody of Manga and Video Games. This story is currently being made into a movie starring Michael Cera and directed by Edgar Wright. Very fun!
Something Blue: As my birthday present in October, we got tickets to go see Kevin Smith when he comes to the Benaroya Hall. Long time fan of Silent Bob and all things from the View Askewniverse, especially love the Smodcast. He is living the ultimate geek dream, so it’s nice to go worship at the altar of Kevin. (As you know, his form of expression is wonderfully profane, hence the something BLUE).
Still enjoying your podcast,
Thanks for the chance to let my geek flag fly!
