Alert visitors to the Seattle Geekly website may notice that things look a little different around here. There is a story behind the changes and as tempting as it is to change the story so I don’t look like quite such a moran, the truth will out.
I was getting a little tired of the look of the Seattle Geekly website. The wordpress theme we had been using was an older one and pretty much the only reason I had picked that one in the first place was because it was the one I had used for my personal blog and I knew it looked reasonably good and was fairly easy to set up. I was in the market for something new, but I didn’t want to be fiddling around and experimenting on the live site since I know that occasionally people actually visit the live site and I have an uncanny knack for breaking something or taking something off-line at the exact moment that someone is trying to access it thus providing a frustrating and unsatisfying experience.
Even with my limited (read non-existent) skills as a webmaster I knew what I had to do. I set up a dummy directory with a copy of all my wordpress files in it so I could fiddle and tweak and experiment to my heart’s content and not disrupt the live page. Enormously pleased with myself I went to work and the first thing I did was hit a button that took me back to the WP admin panel for the live site and started mucking around, realizing only after I was about halfway through some experimental changes that I wasn’t making the changes in my clone directory.
Ooops.
So this is the new look for the site. I had to get it together with a bit more haste than I had anticipated, but I think I have it more or less the way I want it and I think everything works.
