This is another off-week for the Seattle Geekly podcast, so there will be no new episode this Thursday. We’ll be back next week though with our very own 2009 wrap up. It may seem like we’ll be late to the party for the end-of-the-year list making but, unlike many others, we insist on the year being review to actually be over before we review it. What if something fantastic happens this week that just blows everything that has come before out of the water? Who’ll be laughing then as we include it on our best-of list while others look foolish?
Anyway…

Once again we have a short review before we dive into the news. This week we look at Sherlock Holmes. Shannon’s review from Ask a Geek Gal
I knew from the trailers that this was not going to be a serious take on the Sherlock Holmes mythos. However, the trailer did make the movie seems more action based than it truly is. Though not a fan of Jude Law, I found his straight-man Watson to Robert Downey, Jr.’s witty Holmes very sincere and the chemistry between them magical. The movie uses characters that fans of Conan Doyles’ books will find refreshing, but don’t think this is your grandfather’s Holmes. Ritchie (Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels, Snatch) does wonderfully with the ensemble cast, and Hans Zimmer creates a fun soundtrack. Go into the film not expecting anything but a fun ride, and you’ll have a great time!
Verdict: Even if you were on the fence about seeing it, go see it in the theater for at least matinee price! 4.75 out of 5 geek glasses
Short news week is under the fold
Mostly what I’ve been finding in the news department is more year/decade in review lists.
- Comic Book Resources has finished their list of the 100 best comic book storylines of all time. Chances are good that if you have a favorite, its on there.
- Bit Rebels has their list of the 10 best video games of the decade
- and Wired has their list of the 15 most influential games of the decade. Interesting to see how little overlap there was on those two lists.
TV

One bit of new news in the television front. TV Guide (via our very own Seattle PI) is reporting that Ricky Gervais and his Extras and The Office co-creator Stephen Merchant are teaming up for a new animated series on HBO starting in February. The series will be based on Gervais and Merchant’s popular podcast which also features comic Karl Pilkington.
