This year promises to be a pretty good one for movies and we plan on trying to keep you up to date on films with geek appeal throughout 2010. We kick of that effort this week with our Winter Movie Preview. We’ll tell you what’s coming up and give you our take on whether it’s worth seeing in the theater or a “wait for DVD” kind of movie. We also talk to EMP|SFM curator Brooks Peck about the upcoming Science Fiction and Fantasy Short Film Festival that will be at the Cinerama later this month.
All that plus the weekly geek news and Seattle area geek events.

- January 15 – 21, 2010 The Grand Illusion 1403 NE 50th St, Seattle – Until the Light Takes Us (2008). Until the Light Takes Us tells the story of black metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to world-wide notoriety in the mid nineties when a rash of suicides, murders and church burnings accompanied the explosive artistic growth and output of a music scene that would forever redefine heavy metal. The film goes behind the highly sensationalized media reports of “Satanists running amok in Europe” to examine the complex and largely misunderstood principles and beliefs that lead to this rebellion against both Christianity and modern culture. To capture this, directors Aaron Aites and Audry Ewell moved to Norway and lived with the musicians for several years, building relationships that allowed them to create a surprisingly intimate portrait of this violent, but ultimately misunderstood movement. The result is a poignant, strangely moving story about a music scene that blazed a path of murder and arson across the northern sky. Plays at 7 and 9pm Sunday – Thursday and 8 pm Friday and Saturday.

Contest!

As we mentioned it before, Torchlight was one of our favorite games in 2009 and the great folks at Runic Games here in Seattle gave us a code for a free download of Torchlight that we’ll be giving away to 1 lucky listener!
Torchlight is an amazing action-RPG (think Diablo and Diablo II) with a very cool fantasy/steampunk aesthetic. The graphics are beautiful on higher end systems but the games scales amazingly well and is still extremely enjoyable even on older machines. It even has settings to run on a netbook! It is currently only available on the PC but a Mac version is due out later this year.
This contest runs from now until Sunday, January 17 and the winner will be picked Monday, January 18
