One thing is certain about the future; it’s where we’re all going to be spending the rest of our lives. This week we go a little more high-brow than our usual topics. We sat down with local futurist Nick Price and author/futurist Brenda Cooper to get their thoughts on what the next 20-30 years might hold for us. It’s not all seriousness though, we also have an interview with the team behind Passionfruit games who give us the scoop on their urban-fantasy/romance inspired casual puzzle game Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box.
As always, we also have the weekly geek news and Seattle area geek events.

- June 12, 2010 6 – 9pm Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery 1201 S Vale St, Seattle – Megan Kelso Art Exhibition and Book Launch Party. A graduate of alternative cartoonist breeding ground The Evergreen State College, Megan Kelso burst onto the comics scene in the early 90s with her provocative self-published zine Girlhero. Her latest book, Artichoke Tales is a coming of age story about a young girl whose family is caught between the two warring sides of a civil war. Kelso’s visual storytelling, combining delicate line work with rhythmic page compositions, creates a dramatic tension between intimate character studies and the unflinching depiction of the consequences of war, lending cohesion and resonance to a generational epic.
- June 13, 2010 8:30pm Play N Trade 11308 NE 124th St, Kirkland – Death*Star and KGHB – All ages nerdcore show at the Play N Trade. Come play video games and listen to some live music and best of all it’s FREE!
- June 14, 2010 7pm The Elliott Bay Book Company 1521 10th Ave, Seattle – Lev Grossman. Lev Grossman reads and signs his newest book The Magicians. A coming-of-age story like almost no other yet with roots in some older, familiar ground. There is a land called Fillory, there is a high-school senior named Quentin, and there are adventures that unfold. “The Magicians is to Harry Potter as a shot of Irish whiskey is to a glass of weak tea. Solidly rooted in the traditions of both fantasy and mainstream literary fiction, the novel tips its hat to Oz and Narnia as well as Harry, but don’t mistake this for a children’s book. Grossman’s sensibilities are thoroughly adult, his narrative dark and dangerous and full of twists.” – George R.R. Martin
- June 14, 2010 7pm UW Bookstore 326 University Way NE, Seattle – Megan Prelinger. Megen Prelinger discusses her new book Another Science Fiction: Advertising the Space Race 1957 – 1962. As we reached out to the stars, the advertising in scientific trade journals began using a new visual palette. Megan Prelinger has gathered 200 examples of this gravity-defying, anything-is-possible style for her new book.
