Over Labor Day weekend Seattle becomes the center of the video game geek universe. PAX 2010 was huge and it brought video game developers from all over the world together with their fans. There were a couple of big announcements, not the least of which was the phoenix-like return of Duke Nukem Forever, but there were a lot of smaller and independent games there as well that were deserving of attention. We tried to strike a balance between the big names and the little guys in our coverage of this year’s expo and this week we bring you the first of three shows all about PAX.

In this show we have interviews with The Guild co-producer Kim Evey, Ska Studios makers of The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile, Runic Games makers of Torchlight 2 and Broken Rules makers of And Yet It Moves. We also have some details on Tera the new MMORPG from En Masse and the new LEGO Universe MMO.

Our Geek Week

Surprisingly, there was more to our Geek Week than just PAX!

Read Night of the Living Trekkies by Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall

Playing Dungeons and Dragons Online (look for our coverage of DDO coming up later in our PAX wrap-ups)

Went to the Bonebat Comedy of Horrors Film Fest. Short version: It was a blast and we can’t wait for next year!

PAX 2010 – Friday

Since Blizzard didn’t even bother to show up to PAX this year, the best source of Warcraft news was the Raid Warning Podcast panel which we were honored to be a part of. The recording of the panel is available on their site now, so check it out!

Kim Evey, co producer of The Guild

We were lucky enough to catch Kim Evey while she was filming the Jonathan Coulton portion of Yeshmin Goes to PAX for mediocre films. you should watch it. It’s funny.

Tera from En Masse

Tera promises to be an MMO “beyond ‘point and click,’ where position, timing, and aim determine success in combat, and player characters climb, jump, and swim over and through obstacles.” There will be six playable races at launch; Human, High Elf, Castanic, Aman, Popori, and Baraka and eight classes; Warrior, Lancer, Slayer, Berserker, Archer, Sorcerer, Priest, and Mystic. The controls we experienced during our hands-on at PAX were tricky with mouse and keyboard, fortunately the game will support PC compatable console controllers. Just in our brief experience, two analog sticks on a controller would work much better for the extremely dynamic combat system the were showing. Also, please note that the compressed YouTube video below does not do justice to how pretty the game is.

LEGO Universe

The big appeal of LEGO Universe is, of course, being able to build stuff. The game is a full MMO with a persistant world, lore, and a deep original storyline but you will also be able to bring wildest creations to life with a user-friendly programming language. The game is extremely family friendly and although no exact system specs have been released, they will be “minimal”.

Contest

We have a brand new copy of Night of the Living Trekkies by Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall, published by Quirk Books (of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Dawn of the Dreadfuls fame.

This sci-fi/zombie/comedy/adventure follows a group of rag-tag Trekkies getting together for the fifth annual GulfCon (billed as the “largest Starfleet Convention in the western Gulf Coast region”).

Our heroes are dressed in homemade uniforms and armed with prop phasers-but soon find themselves defending their hotel and convention center against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Suddenly, all of their useless knowledge about particle physics and old Star Trek episodes has genuine real-world applications! And while hotel employees and regular civilians are dying left and right, our Trekkies summon strength and courage by emulating their favorite starship-voyaging characters.

Packed with hundreds of gags referencing Star Trek, Star Wars, comic books, and fan conventions, Night of the Living Trekkies reads like the strange lovechild of Galaxy Quest and Dawn of the Dead. Journey to the final frontier of zombie science-fiction satire!

In the Geek Closet

Why be in the geek closet?
There really are reasons that people may not feel like “outing” themselves as geeks, there is still a negative stigma attached to many geek hobbies, particularly video gaming (Employers Screening WoW Players During Recruitment) and genre works in various media are frequently viewed as being inferior to non-genre works (Has ‘Genre’ Become A Bad Word On Television?). It is often easy for those of us who spend so much time being a part of the geek community that, even today, not everyone does, or even wants to understand that world.

Changes at Seattle Geekly: Due to circumstances beyond our control we will be moving the Seattle Geekly home/office/studio (better known as the Geek Cave) shortly. Since it takes about twenty hours a week to produce our hour and a half podcast, the impending move along with the day jobs and family obligations means that we’ve pretty much run out of hours in the day and something has to be cut back. The podcast is NOT going anywhere but we are altering the format a little. We will be dropping the events section and scaling back the number of interviews we do every week with the goal of keeping the podcast under an hour. We will be expanding the content on the website with more reviews being done on the blog rather than in the podcast and every Tuesday we’ll be posting “Events to Watch Out For” to help you plan your weekend. We appreciate your patience and hopefully Real Life™ will bugger off soon so we can get back to being full time geeks!

But at 21 she knows she needs to grow up and prove to her guardians, Paige and Lucas, that she can be a responsible member of their supernatural detective agency. Tsunami Blue is a post-apocalyptic romance, an unusual mix of genre and setting. The world we know has been all but destoyed by a continuing series of devistating tsunamis leaving only scattered settlements of “Uplanders” living on the remains of the dry land and roving bands of bloodthirsty merciless “Runners” on the seas. Tsunami Blue, the titular character, is a survivor who, because of her ability to predict the coming of killer waves is both feared and revered. Blue is forced to live a solitary life of running and hiding to avoid the Runners who want to exploit her power for their own gain.
Tsunami Blue has elements of a typical romance, but Blue is hardly the typical damsel in distress in need of rescue by the ruggedly handsom hero. There is a ruggedly handsome hero, of course, but Blue tends to do most of the rescuing. The world that Gayle Ann Williams created is interesting and the plot wrapped around the romance eletments in the book is actually quite compelling. Fans of the paranormal romance genre will certainly enjoy this book and, while it is a lighter fare than most urban fantasy, I would recomend it to fans of that genre as well. It is a quick, well written, entertaining read.

When: Wed, July 21, 7:00pm – 8:30pm
Where: University Book Store, Seattle
Now we come to the sixth novel in Naomi Novik’s high-flying, fantasy adventure series about intelligent dragons harnessed as weapons of war in the Napoleonic era. The dragon Temeraire and his rider, Capt. Will Laurence, have been stripped of rank and standing after a treason conviction. Sent to a prison colony because of their dangerous ideas about liberty for dragons, they carry with them three dragon eggs and a desire to change the nature of the relationship between dragons and men.

Tom Bissell: Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter Reading & Book Signing
When: Thu, July 22, 7:00pm – 8:30pm
Where: University Bookstore, Seattle
We love Tom Bissell’s books. And—we’re just going to go ahead and admit it—we kind of love video games. Put the two of them together, and you have made happy, happy readers of us. Bissell’s funny and sharp critique of a growing-like-mad part of the entertainment industry raises the possibility that games can actually be art, and raises the bar for anyone hoping to produce games worth playing. (A note: it is quite likely we will force Mr. Bissell to demonstrate his Rock Band drummer chops during this event. Come prepared for that.)

Terry Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters
When: Fri, July 23, 7:30pm – 10:30pm
Where: Open Circle Theater 2222 Second Ave, Seattle
Open Circle Theater is pleased to present the stage adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s cult Discworld novel WYRD SISTERS. Wyrd Sisters takes Macbeth and then turns it up ‘till the knob comes off (with healthy doses of Hamlet, Lear and Richard III implied as well). It’s all there – a wicked duke and duchess, the ghost of the murdered king, dim soldiers, strolling players, a land in peril. And who stands between the Kingdom and destruction? Three powerful witches and a cartload of puns, jokes and lampooning. It’s “the Scottish play” from the witches perspective.

We have revamped the full Event Calendar so check it out to see what you need to go to!

We have interviews with many of the media guests from the convention including Heather Langenkamp, Felissa Rose, Doug Jones and Ernie Hudson, we have interviews with local luminaries like “Bonehand” Steve from the Bonebat Show podcast, Julie Hoverson, creator and producer of the audio drama 19 Nocturne Boulevard, Dread Central and Fangoria writer Sean “The Butcher” Smithson and many more.

The show is very long this week. We recommend you break it up a little and stretch it out over the next two weeks to make up for the fact that we will not be putting out another episode until July 15. We will be continuing to update the website with news and reveiws, maintaining the event calendar and there MAY even be some Crypticon swag given away so keep checking back!
